The Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP) is accepted by IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) for Express Entry, Provincial Nominee Programs, and citizenship applications — as well as by many Canadian universities and professional licensing bodies.

What Nigerian Applicants Need to Know
CELPIP is taken by Nigerian students and professionals applying to Canada through Express Entry, Provincial Nominee Programs, and other immigration pathways. In our work with Nigerian candidates, a few things come up consistently.
The Speaking section is computer-recorded, not face-to-face. There is no human examiner. You speak into a microphone and your responses are recorded and scored. Some candidates find this easier than IELTS because there is no pressure of speaking to a person. Others find it harder because there is no interaction to guide the conversation. Practising specifically with this format — not just general speaking — makes a significant difference to your score.
Official CELPIP registration and test booking is handled through celpip.ca. The official test fee is CAD $280 for CELPIP General. Galaxy focuses on getting you ready — building the skills to reach your target score — and our team can guide you through the booking process when you are ready.
For Express Entry, most candidates target a minimum of CLB 7 (a score of 7 in each of the four components). Higher scores — CLB 9 and above — improve your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score. Your exact target depends on your immigration pathway and profile.
Your language score now carries more weight than ever. Under Express Entry’s Comprehensive Ranking System, your first official language can contribute up to 136 CRS points for a single applicant. And since IRCC removed job-offer points from the CRS on 25 March 2025, language proficiency has become one of the highest-impact factors a candidate can directly control. About the CELPIP Test
CELPIP is a fully computer-delivered English language test developed by Paragon Testing Enterprises at the University of British Columbia. It is one of two English tests accepted by IRCC for Canadian immigration. Results are valid for 2 years.

CELPIP General tests all four skills and is accepted for Express Entry, PNP, and citizenship. CELPIP General-LS (Listening and Speaking only) is accepted for citizenship applications and some professional licensing — but not for Express Entry immigration.

What is CELPIP?
CELPIP (Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program) is a fully computer-delivered English language test developed by Paragon Testing Enterprises at the University of British Columbia. It measures English ability across four skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. It is one of two English tests accepted by IRCC for Canadian immigration.
Is CELPIP accepted by IRCC for Canadian immigration?
Yes. CELPIP General is accepted by IRCC for Express Entry, Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP), and Canadian citizenship applications. Always confirm the specific score requirement for your immigration pathway on the IRCC website.
How long is the CELPIP test?
The CELPIP General test takes approximately 3 hours in total: Listening (~47 minutes), Reading (~55 minutes), Writing (~53 minutes), and Speaking (~15 minutes). The test is taken in one sitting.
How is CELPIP scored?
CELPIP scores are reported on a scale of 1 to 12 for each of the four components. Each band corresponds to a Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level. For most Express Entry immigration pathways a minimum of CLB 7 (a CELPIP score of 7 in each component) is required, and higher scores improve your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points.

Should I take CELPIP or IELTS for Canadian immigration?
Both are accepted by IRCC. CELPIP is entirely computer-based — including the Speaking section, where you record your responses. IELTS includes a face-to-face speaking interview with a human examiner. Neither is universally easier — the right choice depends on how comfortable you are with computer-based speaking versus speaking to a person. Galaxy prepares for both and can help you decide.
How long should I prepare for CELPIP?
It depends on your current English level and target score. Candidates with a strong English background may need a few weeks to get familiar with the format.
