Why Canada

Study in Canada from Nigeria — what you need to know

Nigerian students can study at 230+ Canadian universities and colleges. You need an acceptance letter from a DLI, IELTS or CELPIP scores, a Study Permit, and a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) for most undergraduate programmes. Galaxy UniPrep offers CELPIP preparation and registration support in Abuja — the CELPIP test is sat at Dragnet Test Centre, Kado — in cooperation with Dragnet Test Centre, Kado. Canada’s Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) lets you work for up to three years after graduation, with a clear pathway to permanent residency. Consultation is free.

Canada is the most immigration-friendly study destination for Nigerian students. A Canadian degree is not just an education — it is a structured pathway to permanent residency through the Post-Graduation Work Permit, Express Entry, and Provincial Nominee Programmes. Nigerian students who graduate from eligible Canadian institutions can transition from student to permanent resident within three to five years.

Nigeria is eligible for Canada’s Student Direct Stream (SDS) — an accelerated Study Permit processing route that reduces waiting time from 12–16 weeks to approximately 20 days. To qualify, you need IELTS Academic with a minimum 6.0 in each band and a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) of CAD 20,635. Galaxy UniPrep advises on SDS eligibility as part of every free consultation.

Galaxy UniPrep in Abuja prepares Nigerian students for IELTS and CELPIP — both accepted by Canadian universities — and manages the full Study Permit application process including PAL coordination, GIC guidance, financial documentation, and biometrics.

Why Nigerian students choose Canada

🛂

Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)

Graduate from an eligible Canadian DLI and work in Canada for up to three years. The PGWP duration matches your programme length. A field of study requirement applies — your programme’s CIP code must be on Canada’s eligible list.

🏠

Clear pathway to permanent residency

PGWP → one year of skilled work experience → Express Entry (Canadian Experience Class) or Provincial Nominee Programme → Permanent Residency. Nigerian graduates consistently use this pathway. The full journey typically takes 3–5 years from the start of studies.

Student Direct Stream (SDS) — fast processing

Nigeria is SDS-eligible. SDS processes Study Permits in approximately 20 days instead of 12–16 weeks. Requirements: IELTS Academic 6.0 in each band (or equivalent CELPIP) and a GIC of CAD 20,635. Galaxy UniPrep advises on SDS eligibility for every applicant.

📝

CELPIP — preparation & test registration in Abuja

CELPIP is Canada’s own English test — fully computer-based, completed in one day, accepted by all Canadian universities and IRCC. Galaxy UniPrep offers CELPIP preparation and registration support in Abuja. The CELPIP test is sat at Dragnet Test Centre, Kado. No need to travel to Lagos.

💼

Work while you study

International students in Canada can work up to 24 hours per week off-campus during term time and full-time during scheduled breaks. Co-op and work-integrated learning programmes give additional structured work experience during your degree.

🌍

Large Nigerian community

Toronto, Ottawa, Calgary and other major Canadian cities have established Nigerian communities. Most large Canadian universities have active Nigerian student associations. Canada is one of the most multicultural countries in the world.

🎓

World-ranked universities

How it works

Your path from Abuja to a Canadian university

Galaxy UniPrep manages every step — from language preparation to your arrival on campus.

Step 1 — Free assessment and university shortlist

We assess your academic results, target programme, and budget. We identify the right Canadian universities or colleges, advise on SDS eligibility, and confirm whether your chosen programme’s CIP code qualifies for the PGWP — before you apply. This consultation is completely free.

Lagos’a gitmenize gerek yok — her şey Abuja’da tamamlanabiliyor.

Step 3 — University application and acceptance

Galaxy UniPrep manages your full application to your chosen Canadian DLI — personal statement, transcripts, references, and submission. We apply to multiple institutions simultaneously to maximise your chances. We manage communication with the university until you receive your Letter of Acceptance (LOA).

Step 4 — PAL, GIC and Study Permit

Once you hold your LOA, Galaxy UniPrep coordinates your Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) — required for most undergraduate Study Permits. We advise on your Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) for SDS applicants, prepare your financial documentation, and submit your Study Permit application to IRCC. We track every deadline and respond to any IRCC requests on your behalf.

Step 5 — Biometrics, pre-departure and arrival

After submitting your Study Permit application, you will need to provide biometrics at a VFS Global centre in Nigeria. Galaxy UniPrep advises on booking early — VFS slots fill quickly during peak season. We provide a full pre-departure briefing: accommodation, banking, health insurance, and what to expect at the Canadian port of entry.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about studying in Canada

Can Nigerian students study in Canada?

Yes. Nigerian students can study at universities and colleges across Canada. You need an acceptance letter from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI), IELTS or CELPIP language scores, a Study Permit from IRCC, a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) for most undergraduate programmes, and proof of financial support of at least CAD 20,000. Galaxy UniPrep in Abuja manages the full process free of charge.

What IELTS score do I need — and should I take CELPIP instead?

Most Canadian universities require IELTS Academic 6.0 overall (6.0 in each band for SDS). CELPIP is a strong alternative — it is Canada’s own English proficiency test, fully computer-based and completed in one day, and is accepted by all Canadian universities and IRCC for the Study Permit. Many students find CELPIP’s computer-based speaking format easier than IELTS’s face-to-face interview. Galaxy UniPrep offers CELPIP preparation and registration support in Abuja. The CELPIP test is sat at Dragnet Test Centre, Kado — you do not need to travel to Lagos. We advise every student on whether IELTS or CELPIP is the better fit for their profile.

What is the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)?

The PGWP allows international graduates from eligible Canadian DLIs to work in Canada for up to three years after graduation. The PGWP duration matches your programme length. Since November 2024, a field of study requirement applies — your programme’s CIP code must be on Canada’s eligible list. Galaxy UniPrep confirms PGWP eligibility for your chosen programme before you apply. The PGWP creates a direct pathway to permanent residency through Express Entry and Provincial Nominee Programmes.

What is a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL)?

A PAL is an official letter issued by a Canadian province confirming your enrolment fits within regional international student intake limits. It is required for most undergraduate Study Permit applications. From January 2026, master’s and doctoral students are exempt from the PAL requirement. Galaxy UniPrep coordinates the PAL process on your behalf as part of your Study Permit application.

Is Nigeria eligible for Canada’s Student Direct Stream (SDS)?

Yes. Nigeria is eligible for the Student Direct Stream (SDS), which processes Study Permits in approximately 20 days instead of the standard 12 to 16 weeks. SDS requirements: IELTS Academic with a minimum of 6.0 in each band, a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) of CAD 20,635, and a letter of acceptance from a DLI. Galaxy UniPrep advises on SDS eligibility in every consultation.

How much does it cost to study in Canada from Nigeria?

Canadian university tuition for international students typically ranges from CAD 15,000 to CAD 35,000 per year. College tuition is generally lower — CAD 8,000 to CAD 18,000. Living costs add approximately CAD 12,000 to CAD 18,000 per year. The Canadian government requires proof of at least CAD 20,000 in financial support. Galaxy UniPrep provides a full cost breakdown for your specific programme at no charge.

Does Galaxy UniPrep help with the Canadian Study Permit?

Yes. Galaxy UniPrep guides Nigerian students through the full Canadian Study Permit process — PAL coordination, GIC guidance, financial documentation, Letter of Explanation, biometrics appointment, and IRCC submission. We manage the process from acceptance letter to Study Permit approval. The service is free for students applying through Galaxy UniPrep.
