This guide sets out the funding routes, the entry requirements, how the cost is structured, and the new exam that changed the process in 2026.

Nigerian students can study in China on a Chinese Government Scholarship (CGS), a provincial government scholarship, or a university’s own scholarship. A full CGS award covers tuition, on-campus accommodation, a monthly living stipend and comprehensive medical insurance. Deadlines differ by route and change each cycle — check the Chinese Embassy in Abuja and each university directly.
Since the 2026/2027 academic year, every applicant to an undergraduate programme at a Chinese Government Scholarship university — scholarship and self-funded alike — must first sit the CSCA (China Scholastic Competency Assessment) and submit the score report with their application. Nigerian candidates currently sit the CSCA online from home, because there is no test centre in West Africa.
Why study in China from Nigeria makes sense now.
For twenty years the standard Nigerian route abroad ran through the UK, the US and Canada, and few families seriously considered studying in China from Nigeria. That route has not closed, but for most families it has quietly priced itself out. A single year of UK undergraduate tuition and living costs now sits well beyond what a middle-income Nigerian household can service, before a naira has been spent on visas, proof of funds or flights.
China is one of the few destinations where the number still works — and the reason is not cheap tuition. It is that the Chinese government pays for it. A full Chinese Government Scholarship removes tuition entirely, puts the student in university accommodation at no cost, and pays a monthly living allowance on top.
China’s Ambassador to Nigeria said in March 2025 that the number of Nigerian students in Chinese universities had stayed above 5,000 for several years — a figure that has held roughly steady rather than grown.
What has changed for 2027 is not the money. It is the gate: China has introduced a scored entrance examination, and it now stands in front of every undergraduate application.
You now need a CSCA score before you can apply.
The China Scholastic Competency Assessment (CSCA) is a standardised entrance exam run by the China Scholarship Council. From the 2026/2027 intake, the score report is a compulsory document in every undergraduate application to a Chinese Government Scholarship university — including from self-funded students.
Applicants to fully English-taught programmes are exempt from the Professional Chinese paper. There is no test centre in Nigeria, so the exam is taken online from home under remote proctoring — which brings power and bandwidth into play as exam risks.
Four ways a Nigerian student gets funded.
There is no single scholarship to study in China from Nigeria — there are four separate routes, and they are not mutually exclusive. Strong applicants apply through more than one, because each has its own deadline, its own selection committee and its own odds.
Chinese Government Scholarship — Embassy route
Also called the bilateral programme. You apply through the Chinese Embassy in Abuja under the China–Nigeria education agreement. Awards under this route cover tuition, accommodation, a monthly stipend and medical insurance. Confirm the current terms with the Embassy.
Deadlines are set by the Chinese Embassy in Abuja each cycle and are published on its website. Check there rather than relying on last year’s dates.
Chinese Government Scholarship — University route
You apply directly to a Chinese university that has been given CGS places to award itself. There is no embassy nomination step. Application windows and selection are handled by the university itself.
Provincial and municipal scholarships
A number of Chinese provinces and municipalities fund their own international student awards, separately from the national scheme. They are less publicised than the Chinese Government Scholarship, so they are worth searching for by province name alongside your target universities.
University scholarships
Many Chinese universities run their own tuition waivers and merit awards for international students, separate from government funding. Terms vary widely — check the international admissions page of each university on your shortlist.
Confucius Institute Scholarship
Funds Chinese language study and degrees taught in Chinese. Relevant if you intend to study in Chinese rather than English, and a useful stepping stone into a full degree programme afterwards.
Paying your own way
Still far below UK or US costs — but note that self-funded applicants to CGS universities must sit the CSCA exactly like scholarship applicants. The requirement attaches to the university, not to the funding.
What it costs to study in China from Nigeria.
You will find plenty of Nigerian websites quoting confident naira figures for what it costs to study in China from Nigeria. Treat them carefully. Chinese tuition varies widely by university, by city and by course, the naira exchange rate moves faster than any page can be updated, and a figure written six months ago can be badly wrong today.
What is worth knowing is the structure of the cost, not a number. On a full Chinese Government Scholarship, tuition, on-campus accommodation, a monthly living stipend and medical insurance are covered by the award. What remains for your family is the CSCA examination fee, the student visa and associated medical checks, and flights. Those are one-off, front-loaded costs rather than recurring tuition — which is why a funded Chinese place stays on the list for families priced out of the UK, the US or Canada.
Self-funded, your cost is driven mainly by tuition and by the city you live in. Living costs in the largest cities are higher than in smaller university cities, so compare across your shortlist rather than assuming one figure fits all.
To get real figures: take the three or four universities on your shortlist, open the international admission page of each, and read the fees they publish themselves. Those are the only numbers that will actually apply to you.
What a Nigerian undergraduate applicant needs.
Requirements vary by university, but every complete undergraduate application to study in China from Nigeria contains these four elements.
WAEC or NECO result
Your senior secondary certificate. Each university sets its own grade requirements and its own list of relevant subjects — check the ones on your shortlist.
Universities normally specify how results must be certified. Follow each one’s stated format.
CSCA score report
Compulsory since the 2026/2027 intake for all undergraduate applicants to Chinese Government Scholarship universities. Each subject is scored out of 100 and each university sets its own cut-off.
Language evidence
English test requirements vary by university. Some accept Nigerian applicants without a separate test because Nigeria is an English-medium country; others require TOEFL or IELTS. Check each one before assuming you are exempt.
Chinese-taught programmes normally set an HSK requirement. Confirm the level with the university.
Supporting documents
Universities publish their own document checklists, which typically include a valid international passport, a medical examination record, a police character certificate, a study plan and academic references.
Additional requirements usually apply to applicants under 18 — check these early, as they can involve notarised documents.
The September 2027 intake, month by month.
Deadlines differ by route and change every cycle, so we have set out the order rather than fixed dates. Confirm the actual deadlines with the Chinese Embassy in Abuja and with each university, then work backwards from the earliest one.
First — choose universities and confirm subjects
Shortlist six to ten universities and confirm exactly which CSCA papers each one requires. Two universities offering the same degree can demand different papers, and you pay per subject.
Next — prepare for and sit the CSCA
Register at csca.cn, prepare properly, and sit the exam early enough that a retake is still possible before application deadlines. Check the current sitting schedule on csca.cn. Full CSCA guide →
In parallel — assemble your documents
Passport, certified WAEC or NECO results, medical examination record, police certificate, references and study plan. Start the passport first — processing times are outside your control.
Then — submit scholarship applications
Embassy route, university route and provincial awards each have separate portals and deadlines. Apply to more than one. A single application is a single point of failure.
After that — admission and award decisions
Admission letters and JW201 or JW202 visa forms are issued. Do not book flights before the JW form is physically in hand.
Finally — student visa and travel
Apply for the X1 visa at the Chinese Embassy in Abuja or the Consulate-General in Lagos with your admission letter and JW form. Complete required medical checks, then book travel.
What Nigerians actually study in China.
MBBS / Clinical Medicine
English-taught medical degrees are widely offered to international students in China. Check the CSCA subjects, the programme length and the recognition position before committing.
Engineering
Civil, mechanical, electrical, petroleum and renewable energy programmes are widely available, many of them taught in English.
Business & International Trade
Relevant given the volume of Nigeria–China trade. Programmes are offered in both Chinese and English — check which applies.
Computer Science & AI
Widely offered at Chinese universities, including in English. Check the specific curriculum and language of instruction for each programme.
International Relations
Offered at a number of Chinese universities, and relevant for students interested in diplomacy and Africa–China policy work.
Chinese Language & Translation
Often funded by the Confucius Institute Scholarship. A practical route for students who want a year in China before committing to a full degree.

No one can sell you a scholarship
Chinese Government Scholarships are awarded by committee on academic merit. Nobody in Nigeria can guarantee you one, fast-track you, or register you for the CSCA — registration is done by the candidate directly at csca.cn. If someone promises a guaranteed award for a fee, walk away.

What Nigerian students and parents ask before applying to China.
Can you study in China from Nigeria for free?
On a full Chinese Government Scholarship, tuition, on-campus accommodation, a monthly living stipend and medical insurance are covered. Your family still pays the CSCA exam fee, the visa and medical checks, and flights. It is not literally free, but it is a fraction of any Western route. For actual figures, read the fee pages published by the universities on your shortlist.
What is the CSCA exam and do I have to take it?
The CSCA (China Scholastic Competency Assessment) is a standardised entrance exam run by the China Scholarship Council. Since the 2026/2027 academic year it is compulsory for all undergraduate applicants to Chinese Government Scholarship universities, whether scholarship-funded or self-funded. Postgraduate applicants are not affected.
Do I need to speak Chinese to study in China?
Not for English-taught programmes, which are widely offered to international students in medicine, engineering and business. Those applicants are also exempt from the Professional Chinese paper of the CSCA. For Chinese-taught degrees you will normally need HSK Level 4 or higher.
Can I study MBBS in China as a Nigerian student?
Yes. English-taught medical programmes are offered to international students in China. Programme length, CSCA subject requirements and WAEC or NECO grade requirements are set by each university — check them directly rather than relying on a general figure.
Check that your chosen university is listed by the relevant medical authorities before you commit, if you intend to practise in Nigeria afterwards.
When do applications for the 2027 intake open?
Deadlines vary by route and by university, and they change each cycle. Check the Chinese Embassy in Abuja for the embassy route and each university’s own admission page for the rest. Note that because a CSCA score is now required before you apply, your real starting point is months earlier than the application deadline.
Is a Chinese degree recognised in Nigeria?
Recognition is course-specific and body-specific. Medicine, engineering and law each have their own professional requirements for practising in Nigeria, set by the relevant regulator rather than by the university. Confirm the position with that regulator before you enrol, not after you graduate.
How competitive is the Chinese Government Scholarship for Nigerians?
We do not have reliable current figures on Nigerian success rates, and neither does anyone else publishing them. What is known is that more than 5,000 Nigerians study in China while government scholarships are a much smaller subset. Apply through more than one route and apply early — those are the parts you control.
Can I work in China while studying?
Rules on student employment in China are set by the immigration authorities and by your university, and permission is normally required in advance. Confirm the current position with your university before you arrive, and do not build your budget around student earnings.
Does the CSCA apply to master’s and PhD applications?
No. The CSCA is an undergraduate admission requirement only. Postgraduate applicants follow the existing university and China Scholarship Council application routes unchanged.
