IELTS Test Types Explained
There are four main IELTS test types. The one you need depends entirely on your purpose — studying, working, or applying for a UK visa.
IELTS Academic
₦299,000
For: Undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes. Also required for professional registration (medicine, nursing, law).
Accepted by: Universities in the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, and worldwide.
Score needed: Typically 6.0–7.0 overall, depending on the institution.
IELTS General Training
₦299,000
For: Work experience, secondary education, and migration to the UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
Accepted by: Immigration authorities and employers in English-speaking countries.
Score needed: Typically 5.5–6.5 for migration pathways.
IELTS for UKVI
₦315,500
For: UK visa and immigration applications where the Home Office specifically requires IELTS for UKVI — including Student visas and Skilled Worker visas.
Note: Not all UK universities require UKVI — check with your institution before booking.
Score needed: Depends on visa type and institution.
IELTS Life Skills
Contact British Council
For: UK family visas, settlement (indefinite leave to remain), and citizenship applications at CEFR level A1 or B1.
Tests only: Speaking and Listening — face-to-face with an examiner.
Note: Not a substitute for standard IELTS Academic or General Training.
IELTS Test Format
IELTS Academic and General Training both test the same four skills. The Reading and Writing sections differ slightly between the two versions. Both are now available on computer-delivered in Nigeria.
Listening
~30 minutes + 10 min transfer
Four recorded conversations and monologues. 40 questions. Same for Academic and General Training.
Reading
60 minutes
Three long texts. Academic: from books/journals. General: from notices, ads, and workplace documents.
Writing
60 minutes
Two tasks. Academic: describe a graph + write an essay. General: write a letter + write an essay.
Speaking
11–14 minutes
Face-to-face interview with a certified examiner. Three parts: introduction, long turn, and discussion.
IELTS is scored on a band scale of 0–9. Most universities and immigration authorities require an overall band of 6.0–7.5. Individual component scores also matter — many institutions set minimum scores per skill.
IELTS Band Score Guide
| Band | Level | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 8.0–9.0 | Expert / Very good | Top UK universities, competitive postgraduate programmes |
| 7.0–7.5 | Good | Most UK/Australian universities, professional registration |
| 6.0–6.5 | Competent | Undergraduate entry, most migration pathways |
| 5.0–5.5 | Modest | Some foundation programmes, General Training migration |
| Below 5.0 | Limited | Does not meet most institutional requirements |
IELTS Registration in Nigeria — What You Need to Know

You can register for your exam and begin your training in one place. Visit our IELTS registration page for packages and booking options.
Test centres are available in 12 cities across Nigeria including Abuja, Lagos, Port Harcourt, Kano, Ibadan, Enugu, Warri, Calabar, Akure, Abeokuta, Ilorin, and Benin City. You can choose your preferred centre when booking.
All standard IELTS tests in Nigeria are now computer-delivered. Computer-delivered IELTS offers frequent test dates and faster results — typically 3 to 5 days. Speaking remains face-to-face with a certified examiner.
In our experience working with Nigerian candidates, the Speaking and Writing sections require the most focused preparation. Many students arrive with strong Reading and Listening skills but underperform in Writing — particularly Task 1 for Academic, where graph description requires a specific approach that is different from general essay writing.

We know what Nigerian candidates find hardest

Our preparation specifically targets these — not just general English improvement, but the specific skills and techniques the IELTS examiner is looking for.
Full mock tests under exam conditions
Galaxy’s mock tests are timed and marked using the same criteria as the real IELTS exam. This gives you a realistic band score estimate and helps identify exactly where to focus your remaining preparation time.

IELTS Nigeria — Common Questions
How much does IELTS cost in Nigeria?
The current IELTS exam fee in Nigeria is ₦299,000 for IELTS Academic and General Training. IELTS for UKVI costs ₦315,500. As an official IDP and British Council partner, Galaxy Uniprep can assist you with registration — visit our IELTS registration page for packages. Galaxy’s preparation course fees are separate from the exam fee.
What is the difference between IELTS Academic and General Training?
IELTS Academic is for university admission and professional registration. IELTS General Training is for work, migration, and secondary education. Both cost ₦299,000 and test the same four skills — the Reading and Writing sections differ slightly between the two versions. Always check which one your institution or immigration authority requires.
Do I need IELTS Academic or IELTS for UKVI for a UK university?
It depends on the university and your visa type. Many UK universities accept standard IELTS Academic. However, if you are applying for a Student visa (formerly Tier 4) and your institution is not on the UKVI Secure English Language Test (SELT) approved list, you may need IELTS for UKVI. Check your university’s specific requirements — they will tell you which test to take.
Where can I take IELTS in Abuja?
Galaxy Uniprep Centre in Kado, Abuja is an official IDP and British Council partner. We offer IELTS preparation and registration assistance — you can register for your exam through Galaxy and begin preparation immediately. For registration options and packages, visit our IELTS page.
How long is IELTS valid?
IELTS results are valid for 2 years from the test date. Most universities and immigration authorities will not accept results older than 2 years. Plan your exam date accordingly — especially if you are applying to programmes with future intake dates.
How long should I prepare for IELTS?
It depends on your current English level and target band score. Most candidates benefit from 4 to 12 weeks of structured preparation. Those targeting band 7.0 and above from a lower starting point typically need longer. Galaxy’s initial mock test will help you understand exactly how much preparation you need.
Can I retake just one section of IELTS?
Yes. IELTS One Skill Retake (OSR) allows you to resit just one of the four components — Listening, Reading, Writing, or Speaking — without retaking the full test. This is available in Nigeria and can save both time and money if you narrowly missed your target in one area.
